Hopi TH hallmark

Hi. I have looked in my reference books and don’t see a JH hallmark that corresponds with the J. Hon—- which is written in marker on the piece. Any ideas? Would be grateful. Lin

I believe you are thinking of James Honyaktewa and no, that is not his hallmark. I had one of his cuffs (don’t have it anymore), and this was the hallmark. If he ever used anything other mark, it’s not listed in my book.

I could not find your hallmark in my book, “Hopi Silver, the History and Hallmarks of Hopi Silversmithing.” However, my book is not a recent addition, and if it’s a new artist it wouldn’t be in there. Good luck! It may remain a mystery. You also might try checking with the Hopi Cultural Center on Second Mesa in AZ. They helped me with figuring an artist out.

The cuff I had did have Kokopellis circling it. But I don’t know if they looked like yours or not, and again, the hallmark on mine was like what was in my book. It’s been years since I saw it; I never really wore it, so I gave it away to someone who would appreciate it.

Hi Ziacat. I haven’t yet heard back from the Hopi Cultural Center. I do have another puzzling hallmark. Any thoughts? Lin

I believe I found that one for you! It’s without the N in my book, but it’s on the Amerindian site with both. And I was able to find quite a few things with a quick google search with matching hallmark for Lyman Nasyestewa.

I’m glad I found it, cause I really felt like I’d seen that hallmark before. Nice earring!

I believe the picture is a quail. My favorite bird! Thanks again

My edition of Hopi Silver doesnt list Lyman. Likely in the newer edition. Have to find it!

It’s a fox, per Hougart’s (and it’s a good call).

That looks like the one I have; I bought mine around '95 so it’s pretty old. Mine had the fox head listed for the hallmark, but not the N. So I also looked at Amerindian and online.

I’m thinking you mean your earring has a quail in it? I didn’t see it at first, but I think I see it now.

I also love quails. We don’t have them here (we have Bobwhites which are in the same family), but my best friend in Phoenix has them all over her yard.

The figure looks like a Longhair Kachina in profile, a pretty frequently done image. Those are feathers on the top of the head, which a human dancer or a wood kachina would also have. Like this:

Yes, the image on the earrings resembles to my eye a quail. I have a huge covey of California quail that come around two to three times a day. They remind me of little chickens.

Now I see it!! But I still can’t unsee a little quail in the middle

Ah, there he is chicfarmer, the little fox, in my Hougart’s. I don’t know how I missed it! Grateful for the late Bille Hougart.

I’m a pretty avid bird watcher, but since we don’t have quails here I didn’t know their call. One time at my friend’s I said, do your neighbors have peacocks? And then we figured out it was the quails.

Here’s my little quail which was my mom’s. She visited my friend’s with me once, and my mom absolutely loved the quails.

Ah, like that little quail guy.

Chicfarmer - long hair kachina. You may be right. Will find more of these guys online.
