In honor of Halloween coming up, I got this cute spider pin/ pendant by Effie Garfield (whom I hadn’t heard of prior to finding this guy). It’s quite a bit bigger than I thought. :joy:

I thought I’d share.

He is quite cool, but I admit I really dislike spiders (they’re fine on the outside of my house, just not on me ) so I could never wear it :joy: But I am certain you will rock it!

Thanks @Ziacat Lol Yeah, I don’t like getting bitten by spiders but, I’ve always found them to be super interesting looking :slightly_smiling_face:

I imagine I’ll be ruffling some arachnophobes feather when I wear it out in public…:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I would most definitely come up to you to admire it, and I think you’re gonna have so much fun wearing it.

Spiders are amazing. A few years ago at night I watched one weave the most intricate large web on our front porch. Next morning it was gone, but she was back up that evening weaving it again. Apparently some orb weaver spiders eat their web in the morning, and remake it every night. Amazing!

@Phoenix7 - I went through a period where I would buy these whenever I saw them, because I just think they’re so darling. I’ve kept three through the years and often wear them at the same time on a single lapel when I’m feeling whimsical. They’re a touch smaller than yours—about two inches square (and could use a polish).

The turquoise and all-silver examples are hallmarked for E. Spencer (I think her first name is Effie, but I haven’t found consensus on this in a hallmark book yet.) The malachite example is unsigned.

Fun aside: I’ve read the short book on Madeleine Albright’s fascinating brooch collection—and the diplomatic language of brooches (!)—and she also has one of these spiders! Her book either mistyped the hallmark or the final ā€œeā€ wasn’t marked well on her brooch, but hers seems to be by the same E. Spencer I’m familiar with.

Yours is lovely! The larger size is just fantastic!

Wow! I love that spider!

I actually like spiders, and when I find the harmless ones in my house, I just shoo them back into a dark corner!

I love orb weavers! I find them sweet, albeit as big as a Buick! I had one build a GIANT web in one if my cherry trees this year.

Oh, nice collection of bugs you have! The malachite spider is unusual, and very pretty.

It’s nice to see I’m not the only one that likes the little critters. I have a bunch of dragonfly pieces as well but, this is my first spider. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for sharing your collection!

Thanks @Stracci :slightly_smiling_face: I do the same with the spiders except, I always leave the daddy long legs in the house. Sadly, my cats destroy and bug they find but, I can’t save them all

Check out jumping spiders on Reddit or YouTube…they are adorable (gateway spider to getting one as a pet).

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::slightly_smiling_face: I can’t have a pet spider without being considered an arachnid murderer with my 3 cats but, that’s a darned cute spider! I’ll go check out the vid.

I kinda had one as a pet once. A very small jumping spider took up residence in one of my house plants. I watched it everyday, all summer. It got bigger and developed markings as an adult. It was fascinating, the way he appeared to watch me back! One day he jumped from the plant onto the windowsill, and I knew I’d never see him again. I was very sad.

Here’s a colorful jumper that was on our outside door last year.

Well he’s kinda cute, and I love the red on his back. Just the same, I prefer them outside. I got a spider bite once that got infected with MRSA (it was very painful), so I don’t want them on me. Ever.

@Ziacat No, I don’t want them on me either!

But I do enjoy observing them. I even look at the tiny ones through my jeweler’s loupe!

Someone once said that you are never more than six feet from a spider. I think that’s true!

@Stracci That is truly a cute spider! I’m so sorry he left you. He probably needed a bigger area with more foliage and bugs to eat.

@Ziacat Oh gosh, it gave you mrsa!? No wonder you don’t like them. That would probably make me a bit arachnophobic, honestly.
