These are better pictures. Pretty stones. I agree Chinese seems most likely, and definitely NOT Lander Blue. One thing to remember is that Lander Blue was always exceedingly rare and special, even when it was a recently discovered mine. As such it was always very valuable, and therefore as @mmrogers said just doesn’t show up in settings (and with silver work) as plain and unimpressive as this.
OK now that I can see the turquoise I agree with others that doesn’t look typical of Lander Blue. I should have been more cautious about weighing in since I’ve had some eye problems, and my vision isn’t as acute as I’d like. That said, I can see it now and it’s very pretty turquoise.
I’ll just share a Lander Blue cuff I saw and considered (a bit) years ago at the Dennis June gallery in Scottsdale. This was back before Dennis passed, and we had a great time talking with him. He also had an Olof Wieghorst painting my husband considered (a bit). We didn’t get either . I really like the simple but elegant sterling cuff with gold bezel…really sets off these amazing dark stones. (And it fit me just perfectly!!!)
Goodness, it’s impressive, and I’m sure I would have to sell a car or something to afford that. It’s beautiful, but I actually like so much of your jewelry that you have posted better.
We were visiting a lovely gallery out west, and spent a long time talking to the owner. We were the only ones left in the store, and he asked us if we would like to see his ring with Lander Blue, so of course I said yes. He went upstairs and got it out of a safe. Now I don’t know for sure what it was, but it looked like Lander Blue. I cannot remember anything about where he acquired it, but it was 14 karat, and made by Preston Monongye, so it was really high end whatever the case. It was spectacular.
This is a perfect example of what I was talking about. @bboyko135 compare the non-turquoise portions of this bracelet to the silver work on your jewelry. It screams quality. Lander is also very often set in gold, or a combination of gold and silver as here. Look at the stone setting in the bezel in particular. The bezel in the bracelet @Bmpdvm posted is beautifully hand made and custom fit to the stone, and it’s thick and impressive. Compare it to your rings: the bezels are thin supply shop purchased bands bent around the stones with more supply shop beaded wire soldered around it. It’s poorly fit to the stones, with gaps and what appears to be some Devcon like backing material visible on the stones.
Two rules to remember with Lander:
- It’s not Lander unless you have very solid provenance and paid $$$, and even then it still might not be.
- If it’s Lander it will be in a high quality setting.
@Ziacat did you get a picture of the Preston ring?
Echoing @OrbitOrange, here is a fine example of Lander, set in 18k gold by contemporary master smith Perry Shorty.
Gold isn’t my thing, but this example has it all and shores up @OrbitOrange’s statements, high quality materials and expert craftsmanship performed by a very talented and well renowned artist.
I did not. I almost asked him if I could, but I was thinking since he got out of his personal safe, and it wasn’t for sale, that he might not want a picture taken. We were the only ones in the gallery at the time.
It isn’t my thing either, but I think I would make an exception for that ring. What a beautiful creation.
@OrbitOrange Yes I agree about the quality of the rings themselves, I should have listened to my gut instead of my husband. His thinking was that the stone landed in the hands of someone who didn’t have much skill with silversmithing but knew the stone was worth something, so I had to put it loosely in a setting. The other curious thing that led my husband to believe this was that the original asking price that was marked on the pieces was much much higher than a piece like that would normally fetch so he put the two together and ended up with Lander blue lolI told him the chances of it being that we’re slim to none but that I would post it on here and see what you great people thought.
I guess I’ll be forced to take up the gold slack. No worries. It’s tough but someone has to do it.
This reminded me of a post I made a few years ago
Oooooo. Great taste and great bracelet. I take it you are a spouse that buys what you know she will like. Most often men CANNOT buy for their female spouse. You can’t believe what most women have said to me about their mates choice in jewelry.
I never realized that some men can’t buy jewelry their other half would like. We have been together over 32 years, and I have only bought her 1 piece she did not like. I guess the men don’t talk with them and find out what they prefer, or don’t listen to them.
I recall the beautiful belt you bought for your wife.
It’s obvious that you’ve got exceptional taste and there’s no doubt your hearing is impeccable!
I have to admit it has been with gold jewelry. I think traditional NA jewelry might be a bit easier. Plus paying attention and taking a genuine interest - unlike most men I’ve dealt with that are buying sometimes on the eve of an occasion just to fill an obligation.
My husband listens to me very well, but for me Native American jewelry is very personal, so he chooses not to buy for me. I’m sure I would like anything he picked out, but I don’t know that he would pick out my very favorites. Or maybe I’m just extremely picky
I’m going to add that I think I’m very fortunate in that I have a husband that is happy when I choose what I want! It works very well for us
I give you permission to purchase a bunch more in my name. Gold has no appeal to me
For years and years I also had no desire for gold NA jewelry. That was until I saw dark Lavender Bisbee and dark spiderweb turquoise set with a gold bezel. Now I’m really attracted to gold on sterling pieces. So Zia, never say never…your likes may change down the road
I hear ya, but I’m still going to say never I look at that gold with the turquoise, and in my brain I’m thinking, “that’s beautiful, but it would look sooo much better with silver…” However that is totally just me. I’ve never really been a fan of any gold jewelry; I do appreciate its beauty, just does nothing for me personally. But it looks lovely on other people!
Just like my wife, she does not like gold jewelry at all, thank God!
