Any opinions on this small butterfly pin? It wasn’t advertised as Navajo or anything, and unmarked to boot, but I liked it ( butterfly!) plus it was very affordable, so why not. No provenance whatsoever, so it was a blind buy.
I subsequently found a listing on Etsy for a very similar pin that the seller claims is Navajo and from the 1930s. For what it’s worth, that one has a faintly etched (handwritten) mark that looks something like LTA. The middle initial could be a T but looks more like a 7, so it could be a J or something else. But it’s not my pin, so I’m mentioning this as an aside. Mine has nothing: no stamps, no etching, no silver marks.
Anyway, I’m curious to know what you think of this little fella! Is it Navajo? Imitation? New? Vintage?
Awwwww man you just made my heart pitter patter, jogged a memory of my oldest son calling them butterbyes when he was a toddler, He’s 21 now. I miss those days. Times flies….
@Ziacat , “flutterby” is really the perfect name for these charming creatures. I remember when I was a kid, there was a vacant lot near my home that was filled with milkweed. We kids used to go to admire the masses of monarch butterflies that would feed there. It was a magical sight. And there was plenty of fluttering by going on, all right!
Thanks, @Patina ! It does feel quite heavy for its size; the silver is thicker than I’ve seen on other brooches. And at first I thought the pin attachment was just soldered on flat, but actually it’s on a raised crosspiece (below) of a type I haven’t seen before.
