Still thinking about the one I didn't buy

In your place, I would have bought the second one also. They’re both stunners, but the second one has a great repoussé design and looking at that turquoise feels like opening a door to the sky. Just fantastic.

It’s so hard when it’s a choice between two lovely pieces. Someone solved that problem for me recently  Last week I popped into my local consignment store and found a butterfly pin-pendant by Herman Smith in the display case – the kind of quality piece that I rarely come across up here in Canada. I interrogated my wallet, then finally said I would buy it. (Didn’t hurt that I love butterflies!)

The proprietor then explained that there had actually been another second-hand piece by Herman Smith, and that an earlier customer had agonized at length before choosing the other one (in fact it was still on hold for her). Naturally I asked to look at it, and oh my, it was a gorgeous dragonfly with two very striking turquoises. I could see why the other customer had struggled, for sure! So I said, well, I’ll buy this one, but please do let me know if the other customer doesn’t pick up the dragonfly! (She did buy it, unfortunately for my collection, but fortunately for my budget  )

Really my only regret now is that I didn’t photograph the dragonfly. The one that got away… but I’m also very happy for the other customer! Just wish I knew who it was, as it’d be so nice to befriend a fellow aficionado IRL.
