Hey all, when we were at Twin Rocks back in April I practically couldn’t choose between 2 cuffs. Even though this one by Harrison Jim fit perfectly, I still picked the Derrick Gordon cuff, and I don’t regret it. However …I can’t get this one out of my mind. Maybe later this year I’ll still get it if it’s available. First pic is the one I let go; second pic is my purchase (I know some of you have seen mine already, but putting them both here for comparison). Curious to see what y’all think
I know you’re fond of castings, @Ziacat, but personally, I think you made a great choice. The stone in yours is incredibly vibrant, and there is no denying the beauty in any of the Gordon’s works. I like cast pieces as well, but the stamp work, split shank and repoussé appliqués really make your choice stand out.
It’s a lovely, unique work of art by a master, not a thing at all to second guess.
PS. That’s not to take away from the Harrison Jim cuff. It’s a stunning piece, as well, but the stamp work and variations in depth on yours really allow for a beautiful contrast of patina and loved silver.
Thanks for both your thoughts. The owner of the store wondered if the Harrison Jim cuff would poke the back of the hand when wearing it. I didn’t notice that for the little bit I had it on in the store, but I thought about that also.
@Ravenscry that’s really how I feel also, that’s why I purchased it. Thanks for helping me feel better about it Don described the first one as even being a bit “gimmicky” (although he said that was for lack of a better word).
@fernwood I definitely still love the first one; it’s so unique, and I may very well (if they have it) call them, and order it later on this year. I knew either way I went I would go back and forth. I just couldn’t quite spend the money on both right then, because I had set a budget for the trip.
That’s gorgeous too, and I love that stone. I have been finding myself thinking, “to be real, how many cuffs can I actually wear?” I guess I should double them up more…
@Ziacat Ugh, it’s no fun being haunted by the piece of jewelry left behind. While the 1st cuff is unique with an edgy appeal, my personal concern would be about comfort. If the cuff sits at your wrist break (like mine do), the bottom portion may press into the top of the hand during normal movement . The cuff you went home with is fabulous with a gorgeous Blue Gem stone. I know that cuff would’ve been my choice, too.
Thank you all! It’s been bugging me a little, and I was recently kinda wondering if I should have picked differently. I usually don’t have trouble deciding.
@Patina what you said is exactly what the store owner worried might happen. I didn’t notice any problems with it in the store, but I have another cuff that does hit me like that, and is a little uncomfortable, so I don’t wear it lots. I had also tried it in the store and didn’t notice any uncomfortableness originally, so that could have been the case here has I bought the first cuff.
@Ziacat You chose the one you felt good about.
The Harrison Jim cuff, while striking, probably would be uncomfortable and catch on everything.
I think we all still moon over pieces that we left behind.
I still think about pieces I saw years ago!
In your place, I would have bought the second one also. They’re both stunners, but the second one has a great repoussé design and looking at that turquoise feels like opening a door to the sky. Just fantastic.
It’s so hard when it’s a choice between two lovely pieces. Someone solved that problem for me recently Last week I popped into my local consignment store and found a butterfly pin-pendant by Herman Smith in the display case – the kind of quality piece that I rarely come across up here in Canada. I interrogated my wallet, then finally said I would buy it. (Didn’t hurt that I love butterflies!)
The proprietor then explained that there had actually been another second-hand piece by Herman Smith, and that an earlier customer had agonized at length before choosing the other one (in fact it was still on hold for her). Naturally I asked to look at it, and oh my, it was a gorgeous dragonfly with two very striking turquoises. I could see why the other customer had struggled, for sure! So I said, well, I’ll buy this one, but please do let me know if the other customer doesn’t pick up the dragonfly! (She did buy it, unfortunately for my collection, but fortunately for my budget )
Really my only regret now is that I didn’t photograph the dragonfly. The one that got away… but I’m also very happy for the other customer! Just wish I knew who it was, as it’d be so nice to befriend a fellow aficionado IRL.
Thanks! I chose the Delbert cuff even though I love tufa cast work (but I do already have quite a bit of it). But who knows, maybe I’ll still buy the other one later on.
