The Sandcast Thread

The bracelet I posted above broke for the same reason and I had it repaired years ago. You can barely see the seam and I am much more careful with it now.

Finally got a picture of the few sandcast pieces I have! Think I’m going to be on the lookout for more after seeing all these beauties that everyone here has. Those Ira Custer and Anthony Lovato pieces are really great!

The earrings are Floyd Parkhurst. I also know, or knew at one time, the artist who made the cuff on the right (I really need to remember where I put these things). From the left, it’s Manassa, Number 8, and a very colorful piece of Kingman turquoise in the cuffs, and pink conch in the earrings.

@Xtina These are all lovely. I cannot pick a favorite. Thank you for sharing them with us.

@Stracci, I just went through this thread again, and I see that AZboots has an Anthony Bowman ring!

Glad you reposted it, Stracci. The use of the ‘fleur de lis’ and scrollwork is really lovely, and a perfect demonstration of how design influences and artistic expression migrate back and forth between artists of different cultural backgrounds.

I thought it looked like a fleur-de-lis; it also reminds me a bit of a cornstalk.

Was thinking about that too. Parallels between native representations of corn, the form of the fluer de lis, and the liberal use of scroll designs in Navajo sandcast, perhaps a cultural influence from the Spanish and Mexican plateros from whom the Navajos inherited the art of casting and silver work.

Thanks @Ziacat @mmrogers !
I flipped for it immediately. I am really drawn to spiral and circle motifs.
The fleur de lis could be a reference to corn…or not. Only the maker knows for sure.
One thing’s for sure, I love contemporary NA style!

Normally I wear a cheap little silver band (it has some sentimental value to me) on my left thumb, but then the other day I remembered I have this nice little tufa cast ring I bought years ago at a store I like in Springdale, UT. I tried it on my thumb and it worked! So I thought I would add it to the sand cast thread (also wearing my new ring that has some tufa casting to it).

The store owner told me the Navajo maker of my ring, but I’ve forgotten who, and I haven’t been able to find the hallmark yet.

Also liking Stracci’s cuff and Patina’s ring again. Now I feel like I’m seeing the fleur-de-lis/corn type design everywhere  And the ring reminds me of my mom’s buckle.

Your bracelet is fabulous; I love it… and looks like it’s a perfect fit. It is a perfect example of the simple beauty of expertly crafted sterling sans a stone. Although I love turquoise, in my opinion some of the best Native American pieces I’ve seen are just solid sterling. And, if you want to add some color, add one of your fabulous rings😊

That’s a cool ring!
It works great with the others you are wearing!

Yes, I’m loving it! I always wear a big turquoise ring anyway. Whether it’s my creation, or someone else’s.
I’m looking forward to warm weather, so it won’t be covered up by sleeves.

Thank you for explaining this, very much appreciated

Tufa? Sand ?, no makers mark, but it’s beautiful and heavy

What a great thread! Everyones pieces are thoroughly interesting. They way in which they were made, the stones the artist chose (or not) to use, and the designs all beautifully done. I’m not sure when this technique was invented but, It’s kind of a throwback to the styles in the 60s and 70s.
I only have 1 tufa cast piece, and it’s a cuff by Pete Morgan. I found it interesting that he chose to use a hubei turquoise stone as opposed to an American mined stone but, he chose well.

Thought I would add the Aaron Anderson cuff with #8 turquoise and the coin silver cuff here.

@StevesTrail That Aaron Anderson cuff is exquisite. Beautiful #8 turquoise cab, too. This cuff is perfection in my eyes.
