Time of year for corn jewelry

Thanks very much, B. :slightly_smiling_face: I’ll drop you a DM.

@Islandmomma, exceptional pendant by a great artist! I smile every time I see or hear Roy’s name…Talehaftewa, I love to say it and it rolls so well off the tongue (as they say!). So nice meeting him at Indian Market this year! Hopi names and words are so interesting and fun to say once you get them down. I remember having difficulty with the names of the Hopi villages, especially Second Mesa: Shungopavi, Mishongovi and Sipaulovi. I’ve been there several times for dances, etc, but still not 100% sure I’m saying them correctly!?!

I’m never sure on the pronunciation either. One of my Moon Handbook travel books had a lot of pronunciations in it, and it seemed like many of them had the accent on the second syllable which was interesting.

Ha! We’re not Hopi, so we’re syllabically (is that a word?) challenged when it comes to the Hopi language! I try to pronounce village names the same way several potters and shop owners at Hopi do, but who knows😄. And I’ve heard Roy’s name and several other names pronounced by gallery owners; so, I assume they should know…right?? Talahaftewa…I put the emphasis on the 3rd syllable (haf).

May I inquire about your Moon Handbook travel books, please? Photo of a cover? Thank you! And apologies for digressing from the topic. I have a lovely little corn maiden pin (I have not yet identified the artist) and a set from Fernando Benally (Navajo).

Any one in particular? Lol

Here is the AZ one…

Beautiful corn pieces! Is the large stone turquoise? It’s gorgeous.

Whoa @Ziacat, you’re one traveling gal! I have the old AAA travel books, but now-a-days since things change so quickly, I just use good ol’ Google .

I also use Google, but I’m still a book person. Moon handbooks only list a select group of hotels and restaurants, but the books have never led me wrong, and they have a lot of detailed info about all kinds of things. They also are good at pointing out must sees, and describing why something isn’t worth the time. I think over the years I have bought at least 3 versions of the AZ book. They are definitely well read!

Good to know! I also love to use book for references. Maybe I’ll pick up a couple before our next trip .

I’ve shared this before on the forum, but my tufa cast bird pendant by Joel Pajarito (Kewa/SDP) features a corn stalk.

I absolutely love this little bird! And Joel Pajarito’s father is Anthony Lovato, so your pendant does double duty in this thread  I originally wanted to buy one of Joel’s cuffs at Cameron Trading Post, but it was too big.

I love that piece by Joel. He seems to like those heavy borders around the outside— they make his pieces look so clean.

Another one. Overlay ring with corn by Joseph D. Coriz, also Kewa/SDP. I think this one gets bonus points for featuring corn both on the stalk and harvested in a basket.

Yes! Love it. This one definitely gets bonus points also  and clouds and rain on top - the life cycle of corn. Do you know what the symbols on the bottom row represent?

I also like the little tiny silver drops, even on the ends of the band.

Late to the party… it may have been corn season,

But it was also

I don’t know what the symbols on the bottom are, and I have wondered. They show up on a lot of Joseph D. Coriz’s jewelry. I kind of suspect they are waves to symbolize water, but I seem to remember reading somewhere (and I can’t remember where) that they may be chicken heads. :woman_shrugging:t2:

They look like waves, but I would kind of love it if they were chicken heads

I’d speculate that the design invokes the ancestral and contemporary Pueblo waffle garden, a type of dry farming, definitely used for corn. (It looks like a waffle as seen from height.) Like, a fragment of a waffle garden.

That makes sense. I’ll have to Google it when I get a chance to learn more about it.
