Turquoise Celebrities

I don’t usually have anyone to share on here, but there’s a fashion website I enjoy looking at, and I saw this last night. Kelly Rowland certainly looks like she has on a '70s chip inlay peyote bird necklace. The earrings may be Native made also, but I just can’t tell.

Cast members of The Searchers, 1956. Hmm, I didn’t realize Comanches wore Navajo adornment. I knew I should have relied more on Hollywood to teach me about Native American cultures.

Great addition, Tom!

You’ve stumbled upon exceedingly rare photographs of a group of Comanche returning from a raiding party! They should stick with their hair plates and German Silver drop belts, no need for them to be bothering the Navajo and Pueblo peoples.

You mean to tell me there are more reliable sources?.. :anguished:

Have to keep perfect hair for the filming. And an ambidextrous archer. Is that a joint he has in his left hand?

I suppose we should ease up on John Ford for using his artistic privilege to deviate from norms for artistic purposes. Afterall, he gave us one of the best Westerns of all time. :slightly_smiling_face:

One of the absolute best, no doubt about it. Thanks for sharing these, Tom!

No offense to JF. It’s just interesting and often funny how the entertainment industry portrays the players.

The Navajo actors and extras in Ford’s films (as Comanche) have long talked about their experiences and memories of being onset, generally as an economically beneficial and fun time. His biography gets into it, and I’ve read it elsewhere.

I think hers look like Tibetan/Himalayan/Nepali pieces.

@karib Welcome to Turquoise People. Ellen Burstyn’s pieces could very well be Tibetan. Thanks for your post! :+1:

I agree. Those round chubby corals in Ellen Burstyn’s necklace are characteristic of Tibetan-style jewellery.

Off topic: I live in Fort Worth, Texas. There are many descendants of Cynthia Ann Parker and her more famous son, Quanah Parker still living in the area. Her story closely resembles the plot of “The Searchers”. The film is still frequently checked out of the public library here.
