Laura Dern, 2014
I’m admittedly not a huge sports enthusiast, but with the Olympics in play, my inner history
got the best of me.
Gretchen Fraser was the first American to win Olympic gold and silver medals in skiing. I’m not a betting man, but I’d wager she’s also the only athlete to take an Olympic podium wearing a Navajo concho belt. ![]()
What an interesting find, Aaron! ![]()
I was curious about the year. Quick research says she won Gold in 1948.
…and Gretchen Fraser is from the PNW, so we claim her as our own. She “retired” from the team because they wouldn’t let her ski pregnant ![]()
Here’s today’s goody from my library’s book donation sorting center (where I volunteer.) It’s the back of the dust jacket for Louis L’Amour’s book, “The Walking Drum”.
I remember that picture! My mom had his whole set of books. I kept a quite a few, but don’t have that photo. Thanks for sharing this!!
She was the sweetest. We bumped into her up at Griffith Park at the Observatory in 2010, she was lovely to talk to, and took a photo with my husband and kids.
Another legend has passed over. For anyone that hasn’t heard, Robert Duvall passed on at his home in Middleburg, VA, yesterday. He was 95 years young.
Forgive me, Tom, but I struggled to find a photo of Mr. Duvall wearing Native American jewelry. The silver chain securing his pocket watch in his 2003 film Open Range, (a favorite of mine) works for me.
Rest in peace, Robert. ![]()
As always, awesome detective work, Steve.
Thank you.

Great photo, @StevesTrail. ![]()

I could have looked further than my nose.
Great find, Tom. ![]()
