What’s your favorite piece of Turquoise in your collection?

Thanks. This is exactly why I asked because I thought of Simplicio. I have many Wayne Cheama pieces and have learned over the years he learned from his mom - Angie Cheama who is Effie Calavaza’s sister who learned from husband Juan Calavaza who learned from Dan Simplicio. Proud to say I have pieces from each of these as well as other of their family members,

That’s fascinating!

My dad bought it in 71, but I was only 6, so remember very little. Fortunately he had written verification by the store that it was a Dan Simplicio piece, along with other stuff about when the turquoise was mined, etc. But my dad passed when I was 16, and I hadn’t really developed a love of Native American jewelry yet, so didn’t listen to him enough. But I still have the box it came in with the artist info written on it, and my dad’s other notes. He was very particular, because he owned a furniture store that he decorated with antiques, and he always wanted to know everything about everything that he bought. My mom gave me the buckle years later, and that buckle is what started my love of Native jewelry. I don’t know how many people I have had look at the buckle, and how many shops/trading posts/museums it’s taken me too!

Would really love to see your pieces, please post them if you have a chance!!

It has been a while since visiting this forum. A few months ago, I acquired this squash blossom necklace at an antique store. For several years I’d been in search of a squash that fit my shortish stature …. 5’1”. It was made by Octavius Seotewa. (One stone has been fallen out)

I might have to buy a coil weave basket. All your lovely pieces look so great photographed on this background!

Revisiting this post and wondering it the snake buckle has any markings. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Juan Calavaza or one of the Simplicios.

It does not have a hallmark. When my dad got it in '71, he was told by the store owner it was a Dan Simplicio, and I have the info written down from the store. I’ve it looked at a number places who felt it could be one of his. But…it certainly does look like a Juan Calavaza piece. The gentleman who sold it to dad was adamant though. So :person_shrugging:
