I’m headed back to Tucson tomorrow, and thought I might make a stop in Santa Fe and/or ABQ if there’s a trading post or shop that is a “must see” place. My aunt recommends Wind River Trading Post in Santa Fe.
I’ve searched a bit, but any recommendations would be appreciated.
I would highly recommend Shiprock Santa Fe. @TAH has been boots on the ground in their fine gallery and has dealt with them, and I believe @chicfarmer could attest to their standing, as well. I’ve never visited, but have dealt with Paul Elmore, and the owner, Jed Foutz many times. Shiprock definitely gets my vote.
I know that a handful of the galleries I would like to see in person are by appointment or chance, just wanted to mention that.
@BlytheEcho Second the Shiprock rec, having worked with them for years in person at their gorgeous gallery and long distance, consigning/trading/buying. Tops for rarity, quality, and expertise (yes, spendy).
Rainbowman Gallery, a longtime Santa Fe gem, has a thoughtfully curated collection of jewelry (and other great things).
I really like Bahti Indian Arts, the shop of longtime dealer Mark Bahti, located where the Patanias’ Thunderbird Shop used to be. These all are within easy walking distance from one another.
There are other good ones…and also tourist traps to be wary of. Have fun!
@BlytheEcho, I’d like to let it be known that I’ve never physically been to any of these galleries and have only ever dealt with them long distance.
With that said, I’m certain that visitation is by appointment, but I’d be willing to bet you would enjoy Chipeta Trading in Santa Fe as well. Dealing with Don is always a pleasure and it’s a great feeling knowing that profit from his sales fund Native scholarships.
@chicfarmer definitely provided a couple great options!
Cowboys and Indians Antiques on Central Ave, ABQ is one of my favorites, and I also enjoyed Palms Trading on Lomas Blvd in ABQ. TBH I didn’t actually do much shopping the last time I was in Santa Fe.
Years ago I found a lovely cuff in Tanner Chaney Galleries in old town ABQ, and had a great time talking to one of the owners.
@Stracci will have a whole bunch of great Albuquerque recommendations for you.
We didn’t stop in Santa Fe as there is no where to park a truck and 23’ trailer.
Should you be in the Gallup area, I recommend going to Perry Null. We spent a great deal of time in there. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. We purchased a Tommy Jackson cuff, Aaron Anderson cuff, Kevin Billah pendant and a sterling Navajo pearl extension for necklaces.
Thank you all for the recommendations. Some of the locations are closed today and don’t re-open until Monday or Tuesday (Shiprock SF being one….boo), so I’ll let you know where I stop. Thank you again!!
@Ravenscry haha, that’s totally ok! So many people mentioned it, I’ll make time on my next trip to visit Shiprock SF.
I’m going to stop at Wind River Trading (my aunt’s rec) and see what else is open nearby.
Second what @Stracci recommends. In particular Palms Trading in Albuquerque is worth a stop, @BlytheEcho . Well known for their amazing selection, and very reasonable pricing.
I ended up stopping at Cowboys & Indians Antiques as @Ziacat suggested. Super cool, lots of interesting items. I didn’t take photos of the merchandise, but there were two drool-worthy concho belts (and several others you can see in their photos online), some unique Najas (one was sand or tuffa cast, and very geometric), and a wide array of other NA jewelry.
This was the first place I’ve been that had any items with whirling logs on them, and there were so. many. pieces!
I purchased a twisted wire bracelet to replace one I had purchased in my teens and lost in my 20s. I wore it every day and have been on the lookout for one for about 20 years.
I also purchased these dangle earrings with the whirling logs. I just couldn’t pass them up.
Thank you everyone for the recommendations. I have a list of “must visit” for my next trip to NM that will be planned instead of spur of the moment.
