For the first time in my 60+ years, I finally crossed this off my bucket list. My mind sees Royston, purple and red spiney oyster. There may be a touch of sugilite as well. What do you all see? Please share your northern lights pics.
Oh that’s beautiful!! Unfortunately I was too tired last night to go out and look; I would have to driven a little bit outside of the small city we’re in. But I have seen them in northern Michigan, and they are always amazing. I’ve seen them twice over the Mackinac Bridge! Great pictures!
I think here in northern Indiana there wasn’t much pink, just mostly green. Correction: hubby just said our nephew who lives a bit northwest of us saw pink and green.
Did! Thrilling! Interestingly, the eye doesn’t see exactly what the camera captures. It was visible and amazing but the camera shows more drama (blurry bc I don’t know how to use iPhone in the dark ).
A view looking north.
This was from about 1/2 hour earlier in same location, just getting visible (again apologies on quality):
We missed them on our trip last fall. It was a long drive that day and we slept right through them. Our campsite was on Lake Superior. I get sick thinking about the photos we missed. Last night made up for it.
I haven’t seen them up there in years. But when I was a kid we used to go to Canada every year, and we would see them quite a bit. But the best ones I ever saw were near Petoskey, MI.
I totally missed out last night
Where on Lake Superior? My brother in law lives in Houghton in the UP. We visited last spring.
Great capture! It was a magical night for sure.
Here is the link I used to set up the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
I also used a tripod for a phone with 10 - 30 second long exposure. The naked eye doesn’t see what the camera does! The alerts started coming from the Aurora app a little after 9 here in VA.
You couldn’t really see anything, but when I started taking photos and
I was out there at least 3 hours. I have pics pointing north, west and south.
Thanking you for sharing your pic.
Edited to add a second image, not great quality but a moment in the process anyway.
We stayed at Wilderness, Bay Furnace and Beach Camp, a Hip Camp across from the Casino in Christmas. We love visiting northern lower and the UP in Michigan.
I bought an amazing pair of mittens in Houghton. They are repurposed wool and wool blend sweaters.
Although I’m a Canadian, I only saw aurora twice in my life—both times when I was a child—and both times I was in a car driven by an adult who didn’t want to stop to look. Both those times featured bright, pale-green rippling curtains, absolutely breathtaking
So last night was the first time I’ve seen the aurora in decades! Even though I live in a city and there was some light pollution!
Thanks to everybody who’s shared their photos of the spectacular Aurora Borealis! I’m living vicariously through you all…
The patterns you captured are so cool. Thank you for sharing them with us.
We have been to Wilderness many times, and have driven through Christmas several times (K, that sounds weird).
There are some wonderful little shops in Houghton. My B-in law lives 3 streets up (and it is a literal up ) from the lift bridge. From his third story he has great views of it; especially at night when it’s lit up.
Thank you all for the pics! I totally missed the show.
I hear that tonight’s display should also be excellent — clouds willing!
I got home from work to see this:
Looking East:
Looking South:
I think there is Orion in this photo, too.
The patterns and colors were changing extremely fast. Much more than usual.
I hope the lights come back tonight.
Thank you for sharing your photos. I hope they appear in your area again tonight. Nothing yet here in SW VA.

@here4turquoise, @chicfarmer, @chamekke, @fernwood; Wowza…here I thought I’d have to go on a cruise to Iceland/Norway to see this! Unfortunately, here in the desert it’s not visible, but thank you to you all for sharing your fabulous pictures…I’m so jealous!
Thank you @Steve I always learn from your informative posts.
