Knifewings and Rainbowmen

 You’ve done a splendid job of converting this carved, wooden frame into a showcase for your wonderful pins. And the choice of black velvet as the background is a chef’s kiss. Since the pins are removable, methinks this offers you the option to rearrange their layout like an ever-changing exhibit at a gallery.

This is a lovely presentation of your beautiful rhinestone jewelry! You’ve got some very nice pieces here. Thanks for sharing these beauties.

Thank you, @StevesTrail and @Patina!

Precisely Patina! This was the main thought behind it; being able to enjoy them as the art they are and having the ability to rearrange them (add more ).

Oh my gosh, what a work of art you created! I’d put that up in my livingroom too. Nice job on the restoration. I do a bunch of frame restorations as well (for paintings) but, I haven’t stripped one down and refinished the wood without painting it. Love it!

Thank you Phoenix!

I really didn’t think I’d have to. The “before” photo is what I’d seen when I bought it, and I’d thought it was simply stained, as most frames like this that I’ve looked at are. But when it arrived, I saw it had been finished with a red paint with gold leaf applied. So needless to say my fingertips are still a bit numb. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

What a great frame, You made a piece of art with pieces of art. It is very attractive.

Thank you @nanc9354!

I recall @Stracci commenting on it, but I wanted to second her opinion of your new avatar, it’s beautiful!

This reminds me of my mom and her collection of mid century brooches.

These are indeed almost exclusively mid-century and one of them was inherited from my mom

While walking by a pawn shop yesterday I spotted these two vintage Rainbowmen in the window display. I had seen them there over a year ago, but the shop thought they were exceptionally valuable and I wasn’t willing to pay that amount. I popped in, looked apply them again, and informed the owner that their price was far more than anyone world pay for them. I told them what I’d pay, and after a bit of negotiation, I brought them home.

They’re certainly old, simple in design, and fairly large…but different from most I’ve seen…no earrings and straight edge triangular headdress. I’m unable to find this style in Toshio Sei’s book, but haven’t had time to check other references.

If anyone has any thoughts about these two, I’d love to know your thoughts😌

@Bmpdvm Oh, those are gorgeous!! Sat there for 1 year - they were meant for you. Pin/pendants? They look to be made by the same hand. I’m guessing not hallmarked, correct? I’ll check my resource books, too. Glad you were able to take these treasures home.

Thanks @Patina…I just had to rescue them😄. Rare to see these around here. You are correct they are not hallmarked. I agree, they were certainly made by the same maker. They have a funny old ring attached that can be used for a necklace, but it doesn’t seem they would hang correctly.

I did run a soft cloth over them but won’t remove the patina.

Congratulations @Bmpdvm on two beautiful Rainbowmen! :star_struck: They’re beautiful and they look exceptionally well made and early to boot. I love the handmade hinges for the older, hand forged pins. :+1: The color of the silver is stunning!! :+1:

The real deal, super color palette, very charming! It’s neat how their skirts are different but the rest of the design very similar. Earrings are more common but not universal, and to me the applied vertical buttons at the ears visually serve that function. And yes the headdress is a bit unusual but also very cool, departing from the typically terraced (still triangular) form. Congrats!

Thanks @Ravenscry …now I’m headed in a Zuni inlay phase again. I like your idea of framing for your pieces rather than keeping them stored away where you can’t see them. A new project!
@chicfarmer , I appreciate the links. I’m wondering if older pieces initially did not include the more prominent earrings (you could be right about the buttons as earrings). Or more likely, just individual variation. Something to think about😉.

@Bmpdvm Well, I checked 6 of my NA jewelry resource books that feature Zuni jewelry. Not one has a Rainbow Man that looks like yours. It looks like @chicfarmer has hit-the-mark with that posted link. I’d feel confident that your 2 pins are from the 1940s. Congrats!
