Very nice Aaron. I can see why you couldn’t separate them. They have aged well.
Ooh, love them all @Ravenscry! But especially that first one, with the super unique ring around it and those sweet carved wing tips! I’m always partial to all turquoise knife wings as well.
Wowza! Good buy @Ravenscry. All 3 are great, but the first one with the ring is my favorite…so unique! That’s what’s so great about this thread, more and more wonderful Rainbowmen and Knifewings keep appearing😆.
Wow, loving all 3 of your new babies! Honestly, I’d have snatched all 3 up as well ![]()
Thank you all for your kind and enthusiastic comments, @TAH, @StevesTrail, @OrbitOrange,@Bmpdvm, and @Phoenix7.
I thought the carinated ring on the first one was reminiscent of a naja, and that’s one of the first things Tom pointed out. @OrbitOrange mentioned the ever-so-slightly carved wing tips, and that’s one of my favorite things about him. I also like how each of the bodily elements are separated.
I’m glad you guys and girls enjoyed!
I’m going to be honest, I’m not particularly a knifewing fan, but these little guys are just too beautiful. I think the third one’s my favorite, although the turquoise in the other two is really wonderful; it glows.
And even though I said I’m not a big fan of them (but I still appreciate the work in each), they look awesome on your denim shirts ![]()
I now we’ve discussed it previously, but I would love to find a Knifewing that is made up entirely of turquoise and jet.
Thank you, @Ziacat! ![]()
@Ravenscry All three are wonderful, but that first one especially is so distinctive with the circle, his stubby little wings, floating hat and wee skirt! Mind you I also love the second one for the dragonfly “wings”, the fine bezels and the gloriously milky turquoise. And the colourful third one is also chef’s kiss. What can I say, you were right to buy all three and keep them together!
Your enthusiasm and descriptive response was a treat, @chamekke! ![]()
P.S. I thought about adding that they were like young kittens, you want to adopt all of them together so they can keep each other company. (Then I thought that might be too fanciful even for me!
)
Nonsense. ![]()
They all came together in the same lot, so in order to get the first two, I had to pursue the group; which is fine, I admit I have a weakness for them. Though some may call it an addiction.
@Ziacat once told me that they use social media, so maybe the shelter I put together for Knifewings is actually ran by them. ![]()
There’s no new jewelry in this, I just wanted to share, thinking it may serve as inspiration for someone else.
I do wear my Knifewing and Rainbow Man pins, but have never been content with how they were stored. It took a lengthy search to find a Mexican or Spanish carved wooden frame to organize them within that I liked, and I finally did a few weeks ago. I had intentions of keeping the included print of DeGrazia’s Taos Indian Rabbit Hunt, but it was in rough shape.
I disassembled it, stripped the gold flake finish, removed the beige velvet from the mat, sanded/stained the frame and fillet, and wrapped the mat in black velvet. Once the frame was reassembled, I cut a piece of 1/2” thick XPS insulation for the mounting surface that I wrapped in the same black velvet. This allows me to use silk needles to support the pins and provides the freedom of reorganization. But mainly, it gets them up on the wall so they can be appreciated when they’re not being worn. ![]()
Before
After
There are a few other pins that are special to me that I’m still thinking about how to implement, I just wanted to throw these together for this photo.
That’s a great idea!! Hopi pendants/pins would also look awesome like this (I certainly don’t have enough though for that
).
@Ravenscry , what a gorgeous and stylistically perfect solution!
I’ve used a shadow box to display (a portion of) my collection of vintage rhinestone jewellery. But this is much more elegant than any shadow box can be. And of course it’s unique to you, which makes it even better ![]()
I agree, Zia, overlay would really pop against the black! ![]()
@chamekke, this is a great idea! The wood frame and black velvet was something I’d had in my head for a long time, it just took a while to find what I was after. Thank you and @Ziacat for your kind words. ![]()
If you do go for a shadow box at some point, I recommend one that opens from the front; some have magnetic catches, which is ideal. That makes it soooo easy to remove a piece of jewellery for wearing and then to return it again. Example (old photo, sorry it’s not turquoise-related!):
This restoration project turned out great, Aaron! Between color and a nod to traditional Navajo women’s blouses, the black velvet was the perfect choice for the background. The frame is larger than I thought, so I’m looking forward to seeing who else joins this party down the road. ![]()
Your display looks like a lot of the costume I sent to auction.
Thank you, Tom!
Finding a frame I liked that was at the same time sizeable is what took the time. I’m too picky, I guess.
The mounting surface inside the fillet on this one is 25” x 20”, so there should be room for a few more. ![]()
Nice job on both the frame and the displayed pins. All the parts come together well.
