My phone is acting up

I had something on my tablet (I usually use my phone) that Turquoise People isn’t working without an update. Has it been quiet on here for a day or so, or is my phone not working? Trying to figure out if I actually need an update.
Thanks all!

@Ziacat I use my cellphone and haven’t received a message like that (yet). However, I’ve noticed that TP hasn’t had activity recently & I’ve wondered if there’s a glitch with the site or if something else is going on.

Sounds like a hacker. Don’t open it @Ziacat . I’m sure @Jason will give us a heads up of any updates.

Thanks for the warning, always good to remember that. But it wasn’t an email message, just something that pops up from my tablet saying something needs done. I suspect it’s more because I don’t really use my tablet that much. Must have just been a quiet site yesterday.

@Ziacat , I think things are just sleepy at the moment. I haven’t acquired anything lately, so not much reason to make a fresh post.

It’s a long weekend up here in Canada (Monday is Victoria Day, a federal stat holiday) so lazy mode is definitely engaged on this side of the border!

I bought boots, but this isn’t a “show off your boots” site :slightly_smiling_face:

Let’s see just how quiet it gets, first

We were in Victoria awhile ago, and there was a Canada Day in Victoria, but I didn’t know there is a Victoria Day in Canada :joy:

You could put turquoise on them, and show them off in the turquoise fashion category

Ha ha, good point! Victoria Day is a stat holiday in most of Canada, celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria. It’s “observed on the last Monday preceding May 25”, which in most cases is the third Monday of the month. Canada’s biggest Victoria Day parade is indeed here in Victoria (the city), and school bands from all along the Pacific coast play in it – more American bands (Washington & Oregon states) than Canadian, usually! The parade typically runs about 3 hours.

Wikipedia says Canada is “the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday.” I believe it. We’re weird like that

I loved Victoria! We were there on Canada Day back in 2013, and stayed in a sweet little place called the Surf Motel right on the Straight of Juan De Fuca. We walked everywhere, and hung out and enjoyed all the celebrations in the downtown harbor area. We didn’t get to see American fireworks that summer, but watched yours from the lawn of the Parliament buildings! We then stayed 3 nights in Tofino, which was also amazing. It was one of my favorite trips.

It’s kind of funny. When I was young, pretty much every year we went to Ontario for vacation. We were usually there during Canada Day, and we would often forget and go into town to shop, and then we’d be like, oh yeah, July 1st is a holiday in Canada. Seems like we never learned

Funny that American bands are in Victoria’s parade. Guess those college bands love to march! And they are pretty close.

The Victoria Highland Games were this weekend as well. Lots of friends up competing.

I know Surf Motel very well, @Ziacat! It’s quite close to where I live. A visiting friend once stayed there so I was able to check it out the rooms. Such a sweet old-fashioned motel! It’s still there, too, with its front windows filled with huge jade plants

The American bands that take part in the parade are fantastic! I’m always amazed at how professional they sound and how much heart they put into putting on a great show for everyone. I absolutely love them :heartbeat:

I said on here recently that sometimes it seems like a small world. After you saying you live near where we stayed, it really does feel like a small world! I took our photos on that trip with our camera that was not digital, so I just went back and looked through them, because I remember driving and walking around the neighborhood near the hotel. In my notes I said that it was beautiful, with wonderfully landscaped cute houses lining the shore. I’m putting a few pictures on here for you, @chamekke. The first was taken on a drive near the hotel, and the next two were in the harbor area on Canada Day (as is obvious ). I had written in my notes about the second photo that “the girls were dressed in what seemed to be the Canada Day uniform.”
The fourth photo is actually from a whale watching trip we took from Tofino. We followed this pod of orcas for quite some time; it was amazing for a Midwesterner like me. I was honestly blown away by Vancouver Island, and I really want to come back. If I do I will have to email you for more tips!

And on the small world thread, our Pastor (originally from Indiana) came to us straight from pastoring a Church in Vancouver for 9 years. Also, you might enjoy this old thread on here…
Belt Buckle 1907 - Native American?

I apologize y’all; this is what happens when it’s a little slow on here, and I converse with someone from Canada :joy: And we did buy quite a bit of native art while we were on this trip so kind of applies?

@Ziacat your photos are lovely! I recognize all the spots you photographed. Yes, people tend to wear red and/or white on Canada Day. There’s a thing where they assemble people on the lawn of the Legislature (your photo #2) into the shape of the Canadian flag and take an aerial photo — it requires people to be in either or white t-shirts :canada:

And I’m so glad you saw orcas on your Tofino trip! I’ve seen them from shore and from ferries a few times, but not up close as you did. They are such magnificent creatures :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks also for pointing me towards your older threads. Rings and goats on roofs :ring: :goat: :two_hearts:

Could chat at length but I’m not sure how off topic I may go, so suffice to say that if I can ever give you travel tips, just let me know!

P.S. And just to bring my contribution back onto topic, forum-wise…

Here’s a Jacob Kahe storyteller cuff that I found locally for a very good price. The seller described it as a “folk art” bracelet and I wasn’t going to argue!

I love it! Well, it’s kinda folk art, and I wouldn’t have argued either  Fabulous score!

I looked at a beautiful cuff at Cameron Trading Post in AZ last month which was very similar to yours only wider and no hallmark (it was in their pawn section); even had a woman weaving a rug on it. But it was outside my price range, so I just enjoyed trying it on for fun.

I hope you’re able to find another beautiful bracelet that’s more affordable, @Ziacat ! It’s frustrating when something is just out of reach.

Never having been in jewellery shops or trading posts in the American Southwest, I have no idea of what these cuffs “should” fetch normally. This cost the equivalent of US $60, which seemed reasonable to me. But what was really surprising was finding it here in my own town. I can’t imagine how out of pocket I’d be if NA jewellery were readily available in quantity!

If you Google him online, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what you paid for your cuff. You did well

And don’t worry about me, I ended up finding the Anthony Lovato cuff instead for a slightly lower price, it fit me better, and I love it. The one I made the Cameron Trading Post thread about.

I paid quite a bit for it, but when I see the cost of his pieces online, I still think I got it for a good price. And one of the things I love about my jewelry is the memories I have of when and where I bought it; I think of that almost every time I look at my stuff.
