My gosh you’ve got a great collection of Hopi earrings and rings @Patina! I especially like the Trinidad Lucas ring. I’m going through a Hopi jewelry phase in my collecting and have been going through my collection. I have an overlay cuff by Trinidad purchased in the late 1980’s. While looking at available pieces on line, I found a ring by Trinidad on Horsekeeping very similar to yours:
Not a “new addition” but here’s my cuff by Trinidad:
@Bmpdvm Thanks! That TL ring you posted is very, very similar to mine. I like it, too. But, oh, your cuff - it’s fabulous. I’m interpreting that as a medicine bundle on the bear - such a wonderful detail.
I have a ring made by Dawn Lucas, and I was going to ask if anyone knew if she was related to Trinidad. But I remembered my Hopi book has some of that information. They are sisters!
Funny how you go through phases in collecting wonderful jewelry! And, @Ziacat, you are correct, one always needs more Hopi jewelry…I had not heard of Dawn Lucas…just realize in need a Hopi ring😄
Love that cuff. I am at my daughter’s place again in Iowa city and I always stop at Artfacts since they have a good collection of jewelry of all sorts. I bought these two Hopi items. Has anyone heard of Lendrick Lomayestewa? It seems like only the Japanese collect him. so I can’t find out anything about him. Is he young? Old? Etc. The larger piece is by Riley Polequaptewa. My stuff seems sort of bland compared to yours.
Sweet little pendant @nanc9354. I’m not familiar with Lendrick, but Lomayestewa is a name I recognize. I have a piece by Marcus Lomayestewa.
Your piece has the Hopi Silversmith Guild stamp. Lendrick began doing silver work in 1983. Here’s the info found in my reference:
Thank you for the info. I think I also have some earrings by Marcus. Lots of Lomayestewas. It’s nice to know he started in early 1980’s. @Ziacat …thanks…I think it looks like a quail too. I love that lizard ring…so cute.
Not a new addition for me…but I thought I would show this beautiful cuff on auction at SGW …presently over $800. Not really my style but I still admire the skill and work involved by Billy Betoney" Navajo. Everyone have a good weekend.
Yes @nanc9354, it is an incredible piece! Like you, certainly not my cup of tea; to be honest, it looks like a hodgepodge of styles (IMHO). But it certainly represents an example of Billy Betoney‘s skill all in a single cuff🥴.
Interesting that both he and Betty were born in 1934…so they’re 90? Amazing they are still producing (maybe he employs other jewelers?) I must admit I have only very limited knowledge of his work - I have a more “conservative” pair of his turquoise earrings purchased from Garlands ~ 6-7 years ago. I always enjoy seeing the variety of styles produces by jewelers…something for everybody!
I found this paragraph interesting…” Billy tried entering Santa Fe Indian Market on five separate occasions and was denied each time. Determined to show his work, a close relative allowed him to share a booth at Indian Market in 1989. That year he won "Most Creative Design - Any Class,” and continued to win numerous first- and second-place prizes in consecutive years.”.
I love your description with the use of the word eccentric. The cuff is beautiful, but a little too much going on for me. However, the smaller similar cuffs on Garland’s site are wonderful. And when I scrolled down the listings, the Morenci turquoise in some of his rings was wild.
Wow…this is a long, and fun thread! Back to new NAJewelry additions, I’ll add acouple pieces I purchased on our recent 2 week (yes 2 weeks!) car trip to Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. It wasn’t a buying trip, but you know how that goes😁. We stopped for lunch in the little town of Fredonia on the way to the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Of course I ducked into a small shop advertising Native American and found this nice Hopi pin/pendant by Phillip Honani:
Later we stopped at Twin Rocks and had a nice visit with Steve Simpson. As usual there were a lot of fabulous pieces there, but I zoomed in on this wonderful knifewing by Harlan Coonsis:
Question…does anyone know what the dark tan stone in the wings and legs could be?
And not to change the subject, but I will! We stopped at the WatchTower and Hopi House at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Watchtower was wonderful as usual with Fred Kabotie’s wonderful murals in the lower level. Hopi House had really changed from when I was last there in 2018. The upper gallery did not have the wonderful pieces of exceptional artwork I remember in the past. I was able to look down the old staircase leading down to the keva; but unlike years ago, we couldn’t go down. I did notice that the kachina murals along the staircase now have frames around them and that and may have been touched up:
2018:
The young man upstairs was not helpful, but I’m wondering if they might be improving this area for public viewing in the future. I’m glad I was able to access this area in 2018, before the changes.
Beautiful pieces! Your Hopi pendant reminds me of mine, and the colors on your gorgeous knifewing are amazing! I don’t really have a guess on the tan stone (does serpentine come in the color in the legs?), but the turquoise in the tail looks very much like the turquoise in a ring I have that I bought at the Hopi House in '93 - it glows!
Back in April I was also disappointed in the items at the Hopi House, although I did like some of the Charlie John jewelry upstairs, but they were awfully high-priced IMO. Downstairs they had a lot of Mary Tafoya pieces that were a LOT higher than what she sold them for at the Eiteljorg Market. One of them was literally listed $300 more than what I’d seen it priced at previously. But I haven’t purchased any jewelry at the Hopi House since '93 when Jeff Ogg was their buyer. When I shopped there back then there was a little step down room that had a case of pawn jewelry. In April that room had children’s books.
I considered buying some earrings by Christopher Nieto at the El Tovar, but I’m glad I held off and waited for Cameron Trading Post.
Edit: I googled serpentine, and couldn’t find any that color. I saw a pic of something that looked very similar, but it was simply labeled, “tan stone”
Thanks for checking for the tan stone. It wasn’t until I got home that I thought, huh…what is that? Do you have a Hopi Eagle pendant? It’s a simple design, but to me, very appealing.
As I get older I have problems accepting change:woozy_face:. Sometimes my expectations are a bit unrealistic…but, as we’ve discussed before, we should be glad we have experienced these wonderful places back in the “good ol’ days,”
No, my pendant by Manuel Hoyungowa is a Thunderbird, and it doesn’t look that much like yours, but has a similar feel. And I completely agree about the design; it’s what drew me to mine.
I remember that Trading Post in Bluff. We visited the area years ago, and of course being the Hillerman fangirl I am, we had to stay in the hotel that Leaphorn stayed at in the book, Thief of Time.
The more I look at your knifewing, the more I really like the turquoise and tan together, both set off by the dark red. And then the black tips of the wings just finish it off perfectly.
