I don’t know if Knifewings are capable of communicating with one another, but something caused me to recently cross trails with this one. One of his turquoise adorned relatives, that I’ve previously shared, is my absolute favorite pin to wear.
Zuni, Marked “U.S. Zuni 1”, placing it in C.G. Wallace’s trading post between 1937-1942
@Ravenscry , they both look wonderful! I’m partial to the one with the two turquoises, but your newer one is very appealing. And is that a little belly-button on him? He has a joyous look, I think.
(Now I’m imagining a skein of Knifewing brooches flying sideways like geese. That might be a really interesting look, on a garment that’d work with it.)
Thanks to everyone for their kind words and comments. Knifewings are such a neat form, and the hunt for unique examples is indeed a bit addictive. If I wasn’t already enrolled in a recovery program for severe belt addictions, I’d be looking for relief from these guys as well.
This cuff isn’t mine, but it’s a great example of something I’ve been hunting for quite some time; a Knifewing comprised of strictly jet or onyx and turquoise inlay. I just love the combination. this particular example is stunning with the stamped feathers under his wings. The worn bezels are also pretty incredible.
Oooh, aaah!, Exceptional cuff🥰. I’m in total agreement, the combination of jet and turquoise, especially in Zuni inlay, is simply perfect. Was this cuff offered for sale? Probably not, or you would likely have it in your collection😄.
The Knifewing looks heavy! I love all of the stampwork and loops above the wings. What a stunning piece!! The butterfly is a showstopper, as well. The loop accents around the wings really focus one’s eye right to the inlay, this is incredible. And the Rainbowman cuff is something else. That lozenge shaped repoussé element is unique and I really like the twisted wire. It looks like there is an incredible amount of wear at 12 and 6 o’clock on the carinated portion, is that so or is it just the angle of the photo? Either way these are all absolute stunners, @Bmpdvm!! Thank you for sharing!!
By the way, don’t feel the need to shy away from sharing your lovely screwback Knifewing earrings here, either.
Thanks @Ravenscry ! You are correct about the wear on the carinated wires - showing its age a bit! It’s interesting these three cuffs have differing wires. The butterfly cuff has simple unadorned wires, the rainbowman, flat stamped wires and the rainbowman the carinated stamped wires. Wonderful, fun stuff!
No doubt! The photo of all three of them together is just marvelous. Each one is a fine example of it’s respective form. Thanks again so much for sharing!
OK, @Ravenscry , and thank you for reminding me . I believe these are the tiniest Knifewings I’ve seen. I tend to forget about them since I don’t wear them. Part of me wants to convert them to posts, another part thinks they should be left as screw-back to preserve their history.
This is completely understandable. But you know as well as I that the Zuni smith that crafted them would desire most for them to be worn. If that means a post conversion, so be it!
