@riobravo I’m perusing through posts and wanted to say what fantastic finds! Also: I love the squash you’re wearing in the belt photo!! Thanks for sharing!
@BlytheEcho - Thank you! I’d nearly forgotten about that wild gas station selfie!
The squash is by Gilbert Martin. There are some more pics in a thread on “Navajo pearls,” elsewhere on the forum.
I did a quick Google search to see if there are any comps out there and found a few examples, if you’re in the market. It seems he has moved toward a different (new?) method with the squash beads: rather than attach a single bead/blossom to a tab, he now solders two beads together and uses that as a base for the blossom-end. Interesting! I love his work, particularly the “rustic” quality of his beads, though he is a somewhat mysterious figure—I haven’t managed to find much in the way of biographical information, aside from tribal affiliation. The dealer I purchased my necklace from had originally purchased through Perry Null.
Side note: I’ve really loved reading through your recent posts on the forum! Learned a great deal from that extended conversation about the “Frankenstein belt,” haha! ![]()
@riobravo thank you so much for the info about your squash and its maker. I will definitely do some searching. And because of your mention of Medicine Man galley, I’ll probably wander over there soon. In the 4 years I’ve lived in Tucson I’ve never been there, and it’s about 20 min away ![]()
I’ve been learning so much just perusing the various threads. And the “Frankenstein” belt conversation gave me so much insight, as well!! This forum is truly fantastic.
Just got this Hopi bracelet. Has the Hopicraft mark but no maker mark. Maybe made by Wayne or Emory? Either way, I love the simplicity of the design. Looks like Hopi symbols for rain, clouds (sky band), and water.
Help needed for identifying hallmark on HOPI PENDANT: HOPICRAFTS?H
Here is a much earlier thread where this was discussed. Not quite as simple to identify the actual artist that made it. Nice cuff; I love Hopi work.
Thanks, I knew some of the history and figured there was no way to know for sure other than HC was started by the two brothers who eventually started adding signatures. Still great history. Maybe it could at least eventually date the piece to prior to a certain point—I’ll keep reading!
The Jerry Jacka exhibit is unfortunately a bit meh and they really squeeze it awkwardly into the front area. It’s just a handful of his artist portraits along with works of the artists (which are the highlight). For an exhibit called “Storyteller”, there’s no story being told.
The Heard is pretty lackluster lately. They’re hiding the Harry Fonseca exhibit upstairs while giving a huge room downstairs to the Space Makers exhibit which is a huge effort in mental gymnastics to avoid that the entire movement was cultural appropriation.
The Meryl McMaster exhibit sadly ends tomorrow and is pretty amazing. I managed to make it in five times while it was up.
That’s too bad about the Jacka exhibit. I’m not familiar with the others. But in general I’m mostly interested in more traditional art; that’s just me.
Well based on some of the jewelry I’ve seen you share, you have pretty great taste in contemporary styles as well.
Thanks, I do like a variety of jewelry styles. I’ll have to eventually Google the artists you mentioned, and check them out. My mom attended art school and did a little painting, and she loved more traditional art, so that may be partly why I lean that way.
It is disappointing about the Jacka exhibit, because it sounded like it would be interesting. Oh well!
Picked up these pendants yesterday in a costume lot: one by Marie Tsosie and the other by Jaxon. The only reference to Jaxon I found was that he allegedly was a silversmith at Indian Jewelers Supply.
I was just at The Heard this weekend for their market and also found the Jerry Jacka exhibit lackluster. In fact, I didn’t even finish it. I didn’t spend a lot of time in the museum because of the fair and kind of rushed through. But I didn’t know there was a Harry Fonseca exhibit, now I wish I had seen that! I did make a point to see Eddie Basha’s jewelry collection which was a great collection but much smaller than expected.
And shoot, I totally forgot about this thread and The Frybread Lounge! I was lamenting to a friend the difficulty I have finding good restaurants in Scottsdale, too.
Just a couple new things I’m really happy with. The first is a leather hat band with domed buffalo nickels by Navajo artist CJ Sheppard.
At the Heard Market, I purchased a print (not pictured) by Santa Clara artist Jason Garcia / Okuu Pin. I purchased a print of his last year, too.
I also purchased this sterling with 14kt ring by Santo Domingo artist Joseph Coriz. I’m very happy with this one.
I love Joseph D. Coriz. He’s the first artist I specifically started looking for pieces from/collecting. I really wanted to get one of the turtle pendants he had at market to go with my turtle ring of his but I had spent too much money elsewhere. Your ring is lovely!
I’ve posted my Coriz jewelry in this thread:
You need to eventually share with us where your $ went, right? ![]()
Those are great— really nice collection. I’d love a bolo but those are beyond my price range.
I have some new additions I bought over take course of the month. Small item purchases but for a good price. What are your opinions of the Paquin pendant and necklace? Also…what can one put over a hallmark so it doesn’t wear down…tape? Clear Fingernail polish? Thank you! Second photo is pendant and necklace by O. Paquin. Third photo shows turquoise earrings by P.J. Begay. Hopi earrings by Alvin Taylor and Hopi ring by Milson Taylor. 4th photo has no hallmarks on two earrings. I like the conchos. Does the stamping look to be quality work? Last earrings by Begay were marked howlite but they were wrong so I got them for cheap. ![]()
Especially love the Hopi pieces; one of my favorite pair of earrings are by Alvin Taylor.
Not sure what you’re looking for regarding O. Paquin, but I couldn’t find much on the artist.
Question - why do you want to put something on a hallmark? I’ve never had any wear down. And I certainly wouldn’t put nail polish on it. I just leave mine ![]()
Thank you for your response. Thought I was being shadowbanned for a minute there, I see hallmarks wear off items all the time, so I was wondering if there is something to protect the hallmark. I couldn’t find much on OP either which is why I asked if anyone had an opinion. I really like the lady weaving and I guess I was hoping to get some positive comments. Oh well.
